India and Bangladesh foster ties by inauguration of key projects. Strengthening Connectivity and energy security.

In a move of Fostering India and Bangladesh Relations – Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina jointly inaugurated three significant development projects via video conferencing. This momentous event underscores the flourishing cooperation between the two nations and signifies the remarkable progress achieved in recent years.

The three projects inaugurated are the Akhaura-Agartala Cross-Border Rail Link, the Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line, and Unit-II of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant in Rampal, Bangladesh. These endeavors represent not only infrastructural development but also the strengthening of friendship and collaboration between India and Bangladesh.

Prime Minister Modi noted, “Our relations are reaching new heights continuously. The work we have done together in the last 9 years was not done even in the decades before this.” This sentiment reflects the commitment of both nations to elevate their partnership to unprecedented levels.

The Projects That Foster Unity and Progress

The Akhaura-Agartala Cross-Border Rail Link, a project executed with a Government of India grant assistance of ₹392.52 crore extended to Bangladesh, signifies a crucial step in enhancing connectivity. The rail link, with a length of 12.24 km, features a 6.78 km Dual Gauge rail line in Bangladesh and 5.46 km in Tripura, bringing the two regions closer.

The Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line Project, with a total cost of USD 388.92 million, was realized under a concessional line of credit provided by the Indian government. This project creates a 65 km broad gauge rail route that links Khulna’s current rail network with Mongla Port, connecting one of Bangladesh’s largest ports to the broader rail network.

Unit-II of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant, a 1320 MW Super Thermal Power Plant located in Rampal, Khulna Division, has been implemented under an Indian Concessional Financing Scheme loan of 1.6 billion US dollars. It is a significant stride in the realm of energy security and regional development, managed by the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Limited, a 50:50 Joint Venture company between India’s NTPC Ltd and the Bangladesh Power Development Board.

These projects not only contribute to enhanced connectivity but also bolster energy security in the region. They represent the shared commitment of India and Bangladesh to work hand in hand, fostering progress and unity. The joint inauguration of these projects stands as a testament to the enduring friendship between the two neighboring nations and their shared vision for a brighter future.
