Ramaswamy Opts Out of VP Bid, Trump Ponders Homeland Security Role

Former President Donald Trump has opted against selecting Vivek Ramaswamy as his running mate for the 2024 US Presidential elections. Instead, he is contemplating offering Ramaswamy a position within his Cabinet, according to sources familiar with the matter as reported by Bloomberg.

Trump personally conveyed to Ramaswamy that he will not be his choice for vice president but is exploring potential roles such as Homeland Security secretary. Some of Trump’s allies view Ramaswamy as a suitable candidate due to his articulate public speaking abilities and his background as an Indian-American immigrant’s son, which they believe could help alleviate criticisms of strict immigration policies.

Meanwhile, Trump and his team have been evaluating numerous individuals for various Cabinet positions. These include former GOP primary competitor North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Representative Elise Stefanik, and former US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

Desiring a running mate who prioritizes substance over fame, Trump seeks someone who can offer a distinct advantage against President Joe Biden. However, sources close to him reveal that none of the potential running mates under discussion have met his expectations. Instead, Trump’s pool of options appears to be expanding rather than narrowing.

In a separate development, on Monday, former President Trump issued a last-minute endorsement in a fiercely contested northwest Ohio congressional district. He threw his support behind state Rep. Derek Merrin over another Republican contender, whom Trump’s closest ally in the state has lauded as “a steadfast conservative.”

This move underscores Trump’s continued influence within the Republican Party and his strategic involvement in key political races.
