UNESCO Grants World Heritage Status to 12 Shivaji-Era Forts

12 Shivaji-Era Forts Receive UNESCO World Heritage Status: A Historic Honour for India

Twelve iconic forts associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj have been officially recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, marking a monumental milestone for India’s cultural and architectural legacy.

Eleven of these forts are in Maharashtra, and one — Gingee Fort — is in Tamil Nadu. The status was granted under the theme “Maratha Military Landscape of India”, after a detailed proposal by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums under Maharashtra’s Department of Cultural Affairs.

List of the 12 Forts Granted UNESCO World Heritage Status

  1. Raigad Fort
  2. Pratapgad Fort
  3. Panhala Fort
  4. Shivneri Fort
  5. Lohgad Fort
  6. Salher Fort
  7. Sindhudurg Fort
  8. Suvarnadurg Fort
  9. Vijaydurg Fort
  10. Khanderi Fort
  11. Gingee Fort (Tamil Nadu)

Why These Forts Were Chosen

According to UNESCO, these forts represent:

  • Outstanding universal value in military engineering
  • The distinct Maratha architectural style
  • The spirit of Swarajya (self-rule) and inclusive governance
  • A living testimony to the legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who revolutionised warfare and administrative systems in 17th-century India

“These forts united people from all castes and communities to build a welfare-centric kingdom,” said Deputy CM Ajit Pawar.

National & International Efforts Behind the Recognition

  • In February, a Maharashtra delegation led by Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar visited UNESCO’s Paris headquarters to push for the proposal.
  • The nomination was officially selected and forwarded by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
  • Contributions of Dr. Shikha Jain (Architect) and Dr. Tejas Garge (Director, Archaeology) were pivotal in crafting the detailed nomination dossier.

Significance of the Recognition

  • Cultural Diplomacy: Puts India’s Maratha history on the global map
  • Tourism Boost: Expected to significantly raise footfall to these historic sites
  • Preservation Push: Brings international funding and expertise for conservation
  • Pride for Maharashtra: Honors the military, social, and cultural ethos of the Maratha Empire

“This is a moment of pride. Shivaji Maharaj’s forts have now received global recognition — a true tribute to his vision of Hindavi Swarajya,” said the Maharashtra CMO.
