Draupadi Murmu

New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu honored Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalwart LK Advani with the prestigious Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, at a special ceremony held at his residence in Delhi. The ceremony, attended by top dignitaries including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Home Minister Amit Shah, marked a momentous occasion in recognition of Advani’s exemplary service to the nation spanning over seven decades.

A Distinguished Political Career:
Born in Karachi in 1927, Advani migrated to India during Partition in 1947. A towering figure in Indian politics, he served as the Deputy Prime Minister from June 2002 to May 2004 and held the position of Union Home Minister from October 1999 to May 2004. Additionally, he served multiple terms as the president of the BJP and played a pivotal role in reshaping the national agenda.

Legacy of Leadership and Service:
Throughout his illustrious career, Advani prioritized national interest, championing dialogue and democratic values. His unwavering commitment to India’s cultural regeneration was exemplified by his instrumental role in the reconstruction of the Shri Ram Temple in Ayodhya in 2024, fulfilling the aspirations of millions of Indians.

Defender of Democracy:
Advani’s fearless stance during the Emergency period safeguarded India’s democracy against authoritarian tendencies. As the Information and Broadcasting Minister in the Janata Party government, he played a pivotal role in dismantling the antidemocratic legal framework of the Emergency, restoring democracy to its rightful place.

Contributions to National Security and Governance:
As India’s Home Minister, Advani initiated comprehensive reforms in the national security system, countering cross-border terrorism and promoting peace in conflict-ridden regions like Kashmir. His efforts also led to the creation of three new states—Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Uttarakhand—highlighting his commitment to harmonious center-state relations.

Recognition and Honors:
Advani’s exceptional contributions to public life earned him the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in 2015. His relentless pursuit of enduring ideals such as the defense of democracy and cultural nationalism continues to inspire generations
