India has emerged as the foremost source of international graduate students in the United States during the 2022-23 academic year, surpassing China for the first time since 2009-10. The Institute of International Education (IIE) revealed that an impressive 268,923 Indian students are currently pursuing higher education in American institutions.

This remarkable accomplishment signifies a continuous upward trajectory, with Indian student enrollment in the US experiencing an extraordinary 35% increase compared to the preceding academic year. The surge in Indian students now constitutes over 25% of the one million-plus international students studying in the United States.

The report underscores substantial growth in the number of Indian graduate students, witnessing a remarkable 63% increase to 165,936 during the 2022-23 academic year—an addition of nearly 64,000 students compared to the 2021-22 academic year. Additionally, Indian undergraduate students have shown a commendable 16% increase in their numbers.

India also leads in the participation of students in Optional Practical Training (OPT), with 69,062 individuals opting for this temporary work permission that provides valuable real-world experience aligned with their academic pursuits.

The US embassy emphasized this shift in a statement, confirming that India has surpassed China as the largest source of international graduate students in the US, marking a significant departure from previous trends.

The surge in Indian students studying in the US is further underscored by the record number of student visas issued by the US embassy and consulates in India. During the primary student visa season from June to August 2023, a total of 95,269 visas in the F, M, and J categories were issued, reflecting an 18% increase compared to the same period in 2022.

Acknowledging the achievement, US Ambassador Eric Garcetti expressed appreciation for every Indian student and their families, recognizing their investment in international education as a significant step towards bringing the two countries closer. He also expressed hope for a more balanced representation, urging increased participation of women in US studies and encouraging more US students to explore educational opportunities in India.

As the Open Doors Report marks the commencement of International Education Week (IEW), the impressive surge in Indian student enrollment showcases the enduring appeal of the United States as a preferred destination for higher education. The report, compiled by the US Institute of International Education in collaboration with the US State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, provides a comprehensive overview of international student trends, including those enrolled in US higher education institutions and those engaged in Optional Practical Training from fall 2022 to spring 2023.

New Delhi: In a significant development, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has achieved deemed university status, as announced by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on the occasion of the Council’s 63rd foundation day. This recognition grants NCERT the authority to confer its own graduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees, marking a substantial expansion of its influence in India’s educational sphere.

“NCERT has been designated as a deemed-to-be-university. It has made a substantial impact on research, actively influencing school education, teacher training, and adult literacy. With NCERT’s transition into a research university, it will open doors for global collaborations,” stated Pradhan.

As the leading organization for school education in India, NCERT is engaged in various activities and programs, including educational research, curriculum development, and the creation of educational materials.

Pradhan also proposed the integration of Bal Bhavans and Bal Vatikas (child-centric learning centers) into NCERT, envisioning a comprehensive educational approach designed to provide holistic education to children.

The deemed-to-be-university status awarded to NCERT falls under the ‘de novo’ category. This designation allows NCERT to apply to the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the establishment of a new institution as a deemed university, specializing in the study and research of emerging areas of knowledge not currently offered by existing institutions. In addition to granting degrees to teachers, NCERT will have the autonomy to determine the courses it wishes to offer.

Furthermore, Pradhan proposed the establishment of augmented reality, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence labs at NCERT’s regional centers.

This development is poised to further elevate NCERT’s role in shaping India’s educational landscape by strengthening its research capabilities and expanding its academic offerings.

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (ECOSOC) has recently approved and selected the World Environment Council (WEC) as a key stakeholder in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Indians can take pride in the inspiring efforts of Professor Ganesh Channa, hailing from Solapur, Maharashtra. As the Founder and President of the World Environment Council, Prof. Channa has devoted the past five years to spearheading critical initiatives focused on environmental protection, tree plantation, and tackling the pressing challenges of climate change.

This agenda is a comprehensive plan for advancing people, the planet, and prosperity, while strengthening global peace and freedom. It recognizes the urgent need to eradicate poverty in all forms and dimensions, and emphasizes the critical importance of collaborative partnership among all countries and stakeholders. It aims to liberate humanity from poverty and environmental degradation, and to steer the world towards a sustainable and resilient future. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals such as –

  1. No poverty
  2. Zero Hunger
  3. Good health
  4. Quality Education
  5. Gender equality
  6. Clean water and Sanitation
  7. Affordable and Clean Energy
  8. Decent work and Economic Growth
  9. Industry, Innovation Infrastructure
  10. Reduced Inequalities
  11. Sustainable Cities and Communities
  12. Responsible Consumption and Production
  13. Climate Action
  14. Life below Water
  15. Life on land
  16. Peace Justice and Strong Institutions
  17. Partnerships for the goals

And 169 targets outlined in this Agenda reflect its vast scope and universal aspirations, with a commitment to leaving no one behind. They wish to leverage the necessary resources to implement the agenda through a renewed global partnership for sustainable development, based on strong solidarity and focused on the needs of the most vulnerable, with the participation of all stakeholders.

WEC strives to focus mainly on the 8th goal of the sustainable development i.e. “Decent work and Economic growth”.  Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all

  • To Promote development-oriented policies that support productive activities, decent job creation, entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation, and encourage the formalization and growth of micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises, including through access to financial services
  • To Improve progressively, through 2030, global resource efficiency in consumption and production and endeavour to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation, in accordance with the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production, with developed countries taking the lead
  • By 2020, significantly reduce the proportion of youth not in employment, education or training
  • By 2030, devise and implement policies to promote sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products

WEC, through its ambitious ‘The Environment Protection Bank campaign’ aims to play a crucial role in achieving the Agenda’s objectives, which, if fulfilled, will greatly improve the lives of everyone and transform the world for the better. This campaign will provide students and teachers with opportunities to learn about the pressing environmental issues facing our world and to involve in meaningful activities that can make a great difference. Through this campaign, individuals will be cheered to reduce their carbon footprint, conserve natural resources, and promote sustainable lifestyles. In addition to raising awareness about environmental concerns, the campaign will also raise a sense of community and encourage people to work together to protect our planet.

This campaign is currently implementing programs which are designed to speed up the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in various ways, including addressing interlink ages between different goals. Like, increasing awareness and education can contribute to the achievement of multiple goals, such as SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), by promoting knowledge-sharing, capacity-building, and stakeholder engagement.

World Environment Council is actively involved in communicating environmental education through various activities, programmes and campaigns in schools and colleges. Educational institutions can invite the Council to provide environmental education to future generations, emphasizing the importance of protecting our planet and promoting sustainable practices. By taking action on multiple fronts, the campaign foresees to creating a more sustainable and resilient future for everyone.
