Meta Cleanup Mission

Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, recently shared that they got rid of about 4,800 fake accounts. These accounts were part of a plan coming from China to mess with what people think about US politics, especially the 2024 presidential election.

China’s Double-Sided Game

In this game, the fake accounts didn’t pick sides. They criticized both the Democrats and Republicans using words copied from other sources. It’s like they were trying to stir up trouble without taking a specific side.

Meta’s Confusion and Response

Meta, the Big tech boss admitted they weren’t sure why this was happening. The fake accounts shared stuff from both sides of the political fence, making it tricky to figure out their real goal. Meta doesn’t know if they wanted to make people fight more, gain followers for certain politicians, or just look more real by sharing actual stuff.

China and Russia in the Spotlight

This year Meta has stopped five such tricky campaigns from China, more than any other country. They also shut down a group from Russia. This Russian gang spread stories about Russia invading Ukraine and made up fake media brands.

2024 Elections and Tech Trouble

As the 2024 elections get closer, people worry that tech platforms, like Facebook and others, could be used to cause problems. The US Department of Homeland Security warned that other countries might use fancy tech, like artificial intelligence, to mess with how much people trust the government and make things confusing.

Learning from the Past

This isn’t the first time. In the 2016 presidential election, Russia played with social media to make people fight. So, Meta is trying hard to stop this from happening again as the 2024 elections roll in. It’s a big job to make sure what you see online is real and not just someone trying to trick you.

1. A Missed Opportunity for Cinematic Brilliance

In the highly-anticipated film “Sam Bahadur,” director Meghna Gulzar aims to bring the legendary Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw to life, with Vicky Kaushal in the lead role. However, despite the promising elements, the movie falls short of delivering the narrative fireworks and depth needed to elevate it beyond a straightforward retelling.

2. Kaushal’s Charisma Rescues the Character

While the overall impact of the film may miss the mark, Vicky Kaushal’s portrayal of Sam Manekshaw stands out as a commendable performance. In a year where Kaushal faced underwhelming roles, “Sam Bahadur” allowed him to showcase his magic, reminiscent of his outstanding performances in films like “Sardar Udham” and “Raazi.”

3. Emotional Depth Through Supporting Characters

Sanya Malhotra, portraying Sam’s wife Silloo Bode, adds emotional depth to the narrative, complementing Kaushal’s maverick energy with a compelling performance. However, Fatima Sana Shaikh’s portrayal of Indira Gandhi falls short, with casting choices contributing to the unsteady depiction.

4. Musical Missteps and Cinematic Struggles

The film’s musical score, surprising given the talent of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, is criticized as loud, distracting, and unmelodious. Despite effective use of archival footage, the movie grapples with passive linearity and staccato time leaps.

5. Moments of Sweetness Amidst Disjointed Narratives

“Sam Bahadur” finds moments of sweetness and engagement in individual segments depicting Manekshaw’s life, expertly executed by cinematographer Jay I Patel. However, the film’s attempts to weave these segments together often result in a disjointed feel, requiring some slack due to its largely sanguine tone.

6. A Standout Performance in Need of Deeper Exploration

While Vicky Kaushal’s performance remains a standout, “Sam Bahadur” leaves audiences yearning for more cinematic brilliance and a deeper exploration of its central character. Despite its strengths, the film falls short of reaching the heights set by Gulzar’s previous successes.

The UN Climate Change Executive Secretary, Simon Stiell, has issued an urgent call to action as world leaders gather in Dubai for the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

In his opening remarks at the COP28 plenary, Stiell warned that the world is “on the brink of climate catastrophe” and that “we need to act now, and with unprecedented urgency, to avert a climate disaster.”

“The science is clear: we are running out of time to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius,” Stiell said. “We need to cut global emissions in half by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.”

Stiell called on world leaders to “accelerate climate action” by:

  • Ambitiously reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • Providing adequate finance for climate action
  • Building resilience to climate change impacts
  • Adapting to the impacts of climate change that are already happening

“We can still avoid the worst impacts of climate change, but we need to act now,” Stiell said. “We need to make a fundamental shift in our relationship with the planet. We need to move from a fossil fuel-based economy to a clean, renewable energy economy.”

Stiell’s call to action comes as the world faces a number of climate-related crises, including extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and mass displacement.

COP28 is seen as a crucial opportunity for world leaders to make progress on climate action. The conference is taking place in Dubai from November 30 to December 12.

Key priorities for COP28

In addition to the urgent call to action, Stiell also outlined a number of key priorities for COP28. These include:

  • Accelerating the implementation of the Paris Agreement
  • Addressing loss and damage from climate change
  • Enhancing climate finance
  • Supporting the most vulnerable countries

“COP28 must be a moment of action and transformation,” Stiell said. “We need to leave Dubai with concrete commitments to reduce emissions, build resilience, and address loss and damage.”

World leaders must heed the call to action

World leaders have a responsibility to heed the call to action and take urgent action on climate change. The future of our planet depends on it.
