Ottawa, Canada: In a significant move, the Canadian government has officially designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity. This decision, announced today, reflects Canada’s stance against Iran’s military and paramilitary force, which has been implicated in numerous acts of terrorism and human rights abuses.

The IRGC, established in 1979 following the Iranian Revolution, has been accused of supporting and orchestrating terrorist activities across the Middle East and beyond. By designating the IRGC as a terrorist entity, Canada joins several other countries that have taken similar measures, including the United States.

The Canadian government cited the IRGC’s involvement in destabilizing activities and its support for terrorist groups as primary reasons for the designation. “This decision underscores our commitment to combatting terrorism and holding accountable those who perpetrate and support acts of violence and terror,” said Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino.

The designation will have far-reaching implications, including the freezing of IRGC assets in Canada and banning any transactions with the group. It also means that any individual associated with the IRGC will be prohibited from entering Canada.

Human rights organizations and advocacy groups have welcomed the move, viewing it as a step towards addressing Iran’s aggressive actions in the region. “This is a strong message from Canada that it will not tolerate terrorism or human rights violations,” said Hadi Ghaemi, executive director of the Center for Human Rights in Iran.

This decision is part of a broader Canadian strategy to increase pressure on Iran for its nuclear ambitions, human rights record, and regional interventions. It also comes amid growing tensions between Iran and Western nations over various geopolitical issues.

The IRGC’s designation as a terrorist entity is expected to strain Canada-Iran relations further, but Canadian officials remain firm on their stance, emphasizing the need to safeguard national and global security.

New Delhi: Throughout the election season, the BJP held firm on its ambitious target of 400 Lok Sabha seats for the NDA, rallying behind the slogan ‘ab ki baar 400 paar’ despite the opposition’s relentless mockery. If three exit polls are accurate, the ruling party might have the last laugh.

Two polls have predicted ranges with figures just over 400 on the higher end, while News 24-Today’s Chanakya has forecasted a precise tally of 400 for the NDA. This number comes with a margin of error of 15 seats, indicating a potential range of 385 to 415 seats. India TV-CNX has projected a range of 371-401 seats, and India Today-Axis My India has estimated 361-401 seats.

However, it’s crucial to note that exit polls can often be incorrect.

In 2019, the NDA secured 352 seats, with the BJP winning 303 on its own. If Prime Minister Narendra Modi secures a third consecutive term, it would be historic, showcasing the party and alliance’s election prowess if the NDA reaches even the lower end of these predictions.

A tally of 361, the minimum figure predicted by India Today-Axis My India, would mean the alliance has improved its performance in each successive election, signaling minimal anti-incumbency and highlighting PM Narendra Modi’s enduring popularity.

The opposition INDIA Alliance, which claimed on Saturday that it will win 295 constituencies, has been projected to win 107 (plus-minus 11) by Today’s Chanakya, 109-139 by CNX, and 131-166 by Axis My India.

With 80 Lok Sabha seats, Uttar Pradesh remains a crucial battleground. In 2019, the BJP won 62 seats when the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party were allied. Now, with the Samajwadi Party allied with the Congress, all three polls predict the BJP will improve its tally in the state. News 24-Today’s Chanakya forecasts 68 (plus-minus 7) seats, India Today-Axis My India estimates 67-72 seats, and India TV-CNX projects 70-74 seats for the BJP.

All three polls also suggest the NDA will perform better in the South compared to 2019. Another significant prediction from the exit polls is that the BJP will secure more seats than the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, with Axis My India projecting 26-31 of the state’s 42 seats for the ruling party at the Centre.

Polling for the seven parliamentary constituencies in Delhi commenced this morning as part of the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha elections. Voters queued up early at polling stations, undeterred by the scorching heat and tight security arrangements, an official confirmed.

Weather and Preparations

The India Meteorological Department has issued a “yellow alert” for the day, forecasting that temperatures could soar to a sweltering 44 degrees Celsius. In response, the Delhi election department has made extensive preparations to ensure voter comfort and safety in the heat. Despite the early hour, many voters were seen lining up outside polling stations well before voting began at 7 a.m.

Voter Demographics

A total of 1.52 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots across more than 13,000 polling booths in the city. This includes 82 lakh male voters, 69 lakh female voters, and 1,228 voters identifying as the third gender. Notably, there are over 2.52 lakh first-time voters participating in this election, highlighting the growing engagement of the youth in the democratic process.

Key Candidates and Constituencies

The electoral battle in Delhi is fiercely contested, with major political parties fielding prominent candidates across the seven constituencies:

Historical Context and Current Dynamics

The BJP has a stronghold in Delhi, having won all seven seats in the 2014 and 2019 general elections with significant margins. The party is aiming for a third consecutive clean sweep. However, the opposition INDIA bloc, comprising the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress, has fielded joint candidates for the first time, posing a formidable challenge to the ruling party. The seat-sharing agreement allocates four seats to AAP and three to Congress.

High-Profile Voters

High-profile leaders, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, were among the early voters, emphasizing the significance of this electoral phase.

Security and Conduct

The polling process is being conducted under stringent security measures to ensure a smooth and fair election. Officials have assured that all necessary precautions are in place to handle any eventuality arising from the extreme weather conditions.

Conclusion

As the day progresses, the voter turnout and the efficiency of the arrangements will be closely monitored. This election is critical not just for Delhi but for the national political landscape, given the high stakes and the intense competition among the major political parties. With AAP and Congress joining forces against the BJP, the outcome in Delhi could significantly influence the overall results of the Lok Sabha elections 2024.

The match witnessed a barrage of sixes as both teams showcased their batting prowess, ultimately culminating in DC clinching victory by 11 runs over MI.

Here are the top 5 takeaways from the epic clash:

  1. Fraser-McGurk’s Blitzkrieg: Australian sensation Jake Fraser-McGurk stole the show with a breathtaking innings of 84 runs off just 27 balls, setting the tone for DC’s formidable total of 257/4. His merciless assault on the MI bowlers, including the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, earned him the Player of the Match accolade.
  2. Record-breaking Partnership: Fraser-McGurk, along with Abishek Porel, forged a scintillating opening partnership of 114 runs, marking the highest opening stand for DC in the IPL 2024 season. Their dynamic partnership provided the Capitals with a strong foundation, despite the absence of regular openers David Warner and Prithvi Shaw due to injuries.
  3. Bumrah vs Pant Showdown: The duel between Jasprit Bumrah and DC skipper Rishabh Pant added an intriguing subplot to the match. Bumrah emerged victorious yet again, dismissing Pant with a cleverly disguised slower bouncer. Pant’s struggles against Bumrah in the IPL continued, further enhancing the bowler’s dominance in their head-to-head battles.
  4. Rasikh Salam’s Impact: Youngster Rasikh Salam emerged as the hero for DC with a stellar bowling performance, claiming 3 crucial wickets and curbing the flow of runs during MI’s chase. Salam’s economical spell of 3 for 34 halted MI’s momentum in the middle overs, highlighting his potential as a game-changer for the Capitals.
  5. Tilak Varma’s Brilliance: Despite MI falling short of the target, Tilak Varma’s impressive knock of 63 runs off 32 balls showcased his talent and earned him recognition as a contender for the Indian T20 squad for the upcoming World Cup. Varma’s dynamic batting display, albeit ending in a run-out, caught the attention of selectors ahead of the marquee event.

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, currently in custody of the Enforcement Directorate, has issued his second order from inside the lock-up, reinforcing the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) commitment to governance despite his incarceration.

The Chief Minister’s latest directive, communicated by Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, pertains to ensuring access to free medicines and pathological tests at government-run Mohalla clinics. Mr. Bharadwaj emphasized Mr. Kejriwal’s determination to prevent any inconvenience faced by Delhi residents due to his absence.

“Irrespective of his physical location, Mr. Kejriwal’s concern remains the well-being of Delhi’s citizens. He wants to ensure that every underprivileged person visiting government hospitals or Mohalla clinics receives necessary medications and diagnostic tests free of cost,” stated Mr. Bharadwaj during a press briefing.

Highlighting Mr. Kejriwal’s proactive approach to governance, Mr. Bharadwaj emphasized that the Chief Minister is deeply committed to addressing the needs of Delhiites even while in custody. “His dedication is unwavering, and we, as his team, are fully committed to executing his directives with utmost urgency,” he added.

Earlier, on Sunday, Delhi minister Atishi had shared Mr. Kejriwal’s first directive from jail, which focused on ensuring adequate water supply to areas facing shortages and addressing sewer problems.

However, the AAP’s assertion of maintaining governance from jail has drawn criticism from BJP MP Manoj Tiwari, who accused the party of orchestrating a scripted narrative. Mr. Tiwari dismissed the idea of running a government from jail, likening it to the operation of criminal gangs.

The Chief Minister’s week-long custody follows his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case related to Delhi’s now-defunct liquor policy. The AAP has vehemently denied all allegations, attributing the arrests to political vendetta orchestrated by the BJP-led Centre.

Despite the legal challenges, the AAP remains steadfast in its commitment to serving the people of Delhi, affirming that Mr. Kejriwal will continue to discharge his duties as Chief Minister from his current confinement.

As the political tussle ensues, the focus remains on the AAP’s resilience in navigating through adversities while striving to fulfill its governance responsibilities.
