India, the world’s third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, is poised to play a leading role in the global carbon credit market. In June 2023, the Indian government launched the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), which is expected to boost the country’s carbon trading market to $10 billion by 2030.

The CCTS is a compliance-based market that will require designated consumers, such as large energy-intensive industries, to reduce their carbon emissions or purchase carbon credits from entities that have reduced their emissions. The scheme is expected to incentivize industries to invest in clean energy technologies and reduce their emissions footprint.

In addition to the CCTS, India is also developing a voluntary carbon market. The voluntary carbon market is a market where entities can buy and sell carbon credits on a voluntary basis. The voluntary carbon market is expected to play a key role in helping India achieve its net-zero emissions target by 2070.

The growth of India’s carbon credit market is being driven by a number of factors, including:

  • The increasing demand for clean energy and the growing awareness of climate change.
  • The government’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and achieving net-zero by 2070.
  • The launch of the CCTS and the development of the voluntary carbon market.
  • The availability of a large pool of carbon credits from renewable energy projects, energy efficiency projects, and afforestation projects.

The growth of India’s carbon credit market is expected to have a number of benefits, including:

  • Reduced carbon emissions and improved air quality.
  • Investment in clean energy technologies and infrastructure.
  • Job creation and economic growth.
  • Support for sustainable development.

India’s carbon credit market is still in its early stages of development, but it has the potential to be one of the largest and most dynamic carbon markets in the world. The growth of the market will depend on a number of factors, including the government’s policy support, the availability of financing, and the participation of private sector players.

However, the potential benefits of the carbon credit market are significant, and it is likely to play a key role in helping India achieve its climate goals.

Delhi residents are bracing themselves for a challenging weekend as the city’s air quality took a sharp nosedive, plunging into the “poor” category with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 212. Just a day earlier, the air quality was relatively better, falling into the “moderate” category with an AQI of 177. This sudden deterioration in air quality can be attributed to several factors, including a drop in temperatures, decreased wind speed, and an upsurge in farm fires in neighboring states.

This shift into the “poor” category triggered the activation of the Graded Response Action Plan (Grap), which empowers authorities to take necessary measures to combat the worsening air quality. Among the actions now authorized are the suspension of unregistered construction sites, stringent penalties for visibly polluting vehicles, and intensified Pollution Under Control (PUC) inspections.

Notably, this marks the first time in 114 days that Delhi’s air quality has fallen into the “poor” category, a significant departure from the relatively cleaner air experienced since June 14 when the AQI was last recorded at 213.

Experts warn that the situation is likely to deteriorate further as winter approaches, bringing with it an increase in the burning of paddy in agricultural states like Punjab and Haryana. Unfortunately, this annual decline in air quality is not uncommon for Delhi residents. With the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon in October, the city typically witnesses a decline in air quality due to shifting winds towards the northwesterly direction, which are cold and dry, and a drop in temperatures that hampers the dispersion of pollutants.

To address the immediate concerns, the initial phase of the Grap has been set into motion. This includes the closure of construction and demolition sites larger than 500 square meters that are not registered with the government. Additionally, measures such as deploying traffic police at congested intersections, urging power distribution companies to reduce power interruptions, and implementing regular mechanized cleaning and water spraying on Delhi’s roadways are being enforced.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board, forecasts indicate that the air quality is expected to remain at a “poor” level throughout the weekend. The Comprehensive Action Plan for Air Quality Management in the National Capital Region (NCR) stated, “The dynamic model and meteorological forecasts by these agencies predict the overall AQI of Delhi will stay in the ‘poor’ category in the next few days, and so it is considered necessary to invoke Stage-I of GRAP with immediate effect in the entire NCR.”

As Delhi navigates this challenging period, residents are encouraged to take precautions, stay informed about air quality updates, and limit outdoor activities to protect their health in the face of deteriorating air quality conditions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched a week-long program called ‘Sankalp Saptaah’ aimed at improving the lives of people in aspirational blocks across India. The program focuses on efficient resource utilization, convergence, and public participation for grassroots development.

During the launch at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the significance of optimizing resources, stating that budgets alone cannot drive change, and efficient use of existing resources is equally crucial.

‘Sankalp Saptaah’ aligns with the Aspirational Blocks Programme (ABP) initiated by the Prime Minister in January. It aims to enhance governance at the block level, ultimately improving citizens’ quality of life.

To support the ABP’s successful implementation and develop robust strategies, ‘chintan shivirs’ (reflection workshops) were conducted at village and block levels nationwide. ‘Sankalp Saptaah’ represents the culmination of these deliberations and will be observed in all 500 aspirational blocks.

Throughout ‘Sankalp Saptaah,’ each day from October 3 to October 9 focuses on a specific development theme that all aspirational blocks will work on. These themes include ‘Sampoorna Swasthya’ (comprehensive health), ‘Suposhit Pariwaar’ (well-nourished families), ‘Swachhta’ (cleanliness), ‘Krishi’ (agriculture), ‘Shiksha’ (education), and ‘Samridhi Diwas’ (prosperity day).

The program’s final day, October 9, will celebrate the week’s achievements and efforts during ‘Sankalp Saptaah – Samavesh Samaroh.’ The inaugural event at Bharat Mandapam witnessed the participation of around 3,000 panchayat and block-level representatives and approximately two lakh people, including block and panchayat functionaries, farmers, and individuals from various backgrounds, who joined virtually.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said something really important about a new law called the Women’s Reservation Bill. He thinks this law is not just ordinary but a big deal for India’s democracy.

He spoke at an event in New Delhi called Nari Shakti Vandan-Abhinandan Karyakram and congratulated all the women in India for this law passing in Parliament. He believes that this law will be remembered by future generations.

He also thanked everyone in Parliament, from different political parties, for coming together and passing this special law. Before this, no one really tried hard enough to make it happen, according to the Prime Minister. He thinks this law shows that a strong and clear government is needed to move the country forward.

Mr. Modi also said that to pass this law, the government had to overcome some old problems. But with good intentions and being honest, they could make good things happen.

He also talked about some other things the government is doing to help women. For example, there’s a program called Matru Vandana Yojana that gives money directly to the bank accounts of pregnant and nursing mothers. The government is also working to make sure fewer mothers die during childbirth and improving the number of girls born compared to boys.

The head of the BJP, JP Nadda, said that these decisions to help women will change India for the better. The Parliament has passed a law called the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023, which says that one-third of the seats in the Lok Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, and the Delhi Assembly must be reserved for women.

New Delhi, September 21, 2023: The Parliament of India passed the Women’s Reservation Bill today, a historic moment for the country as it guarantees 33% representation of women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.

The Bill was passed unanimously in the Rajya Sabha, with all 215 members voting in favor. It had already been passed by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, with 454 members voting in favor and two against.

The Women’s Reservation Bill has been debated for decades, and its passage is a testament to the hard work and dedication of women’s rights activists and advocates. The Bill is expected to have a significant impact on Indian politics, as it will bring more women into the decision-making process and give them a voice in the issues that affect them.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the passage of the Bill, calling it a “defining moment in our nation’s democratic journey.” He said that the Bill will “enable greater participation of women in the political process” and “create a more inclusive and equitable society.”

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi also welcomed the passage of the Bill, saying that it was a “historic victory” for women’s empowerment. He said that the Bill will “ensure that women have a rightful place in our democracy” and “help to build a better India for all.”

The passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill is a major victory for democracy and gender equality in India. It is a sign that the country is moving towards a more inclusive and egalitarian society.

Experts Weigh In

Experts have hailed the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill as a significant step forward for India. They say that the Bill will have a positive impact on Indian politics and society in a number of ways.

“The Women’s Reservation Bill will increase the representation of women in decision-making bodies at all levels of government,” said Dr. Asha Hans, a political scientist at the University of Delhi. “This will lead to a more inclusive and egalitarian society, as women’s voices will be better represented in the political process.”

“The Bill is also likely to lead to a greater focus on issues that affect women,” said Dr. Renuka Chowdhury, a former member of Parliament. “This is because women are more likely to be concerned about issues such as education, healthcare, and childcare. With more women in decision-making positions, these issues will be given the attention they deserve.”

“Finally, the Bill will help to create a more diverse and representative political system,” said Dr. Ayesha Kidwai, a political analyst. “This is important because it will ensure that all sections of society are represented in the political process.”

The passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill is a historic moment for India. It is a victory for democracy and gender equality, and it is expected to have a positive impact on Indian politics and society.
