Mumbai: Don Bosco Avsar, Matunga East, in partnership with NGO Masoom, organised a Mega Job Fair on January 29, 2026, at the Don Bosco Matunga campus in Mumbai, aimed at expanding employment opportunities for marginalised youth and other job seekers.

The initiative brought together job seekers, industry representatives, non-governmental organisations, and community groups to create an inclusive employment platform focused on young people facing socio-economic barriers.

Masoom works closely with Mumbai’s night schools, supporting students who work during the day and pursue education at night. Don Bosco Avsar, operating under the Salesian Province of Mumbai, focuses on holistic youth development through career guidance, skill training, and job placement, with a special emphasis on marginalised youth.

Inauguration and vision

The job fair was inaugurated by Fr. Gregory D’Almeida, Director of Don Bosco Avsar, who highlighted the continuing relevance of St. John Bosco’s vision of empowering youth through education and meaningful employment. He noted that the event reflected the transition from education to employment with dignity and opportunity.

A short Hindi documentary on the life and work of St. John Bosco was screened during the inauguration. The film highlighted his contributions to uplifting vulnerable youth through technical training and job placement, a model that continues to guide the Salesian network globally.

Scale and participation

The Mega Job Fair provided an open platform where young job seekers could directly interact with recruiters, attend interviews, and explore employment opportunities across multiple sectors.

According to organisers:

55 companies participated, offering over 700 job vacancies

1,065 candidates attended the fair

50 per cent of participants were night school students from Mumbai

The remaining 50 per cent included college students, unemployed youth, and senior job seekers

Following preliminary interviews, 635 candidates were shortlisted for further hiring processes.

The event was supported by 106 NGOs and community organisations, strengthening outreach and mobilisation efforts. In total, 1,258 individuals, including organisers, volunteers, recruiters, and community partners, were involved in executing the initiative.

Operational support was provided by teams from Don Bosco Avsar, Masoom, volunteers from the Masoom Alumni network, and members of the Salesian community.

Focus on empowerment

Organisers said the job fair aimed to address structural barriers faced by first-generation learners and working youth, including limited access to career guidance and employment networks.

The initiative demonstrated the role of structured employment platforms, industry collaboration, and community partnerships in improving access to jobs for underserved groups. By facilitating direct engagement between employers and job seekers, the fair sought to create sustainable pathways to economic empowerment.

Don Bosco Avsar and Masoom stated that additional initiatives are planned to further expand employment opportunities for vulnerable youth across Mumbai.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has sparked controversy by terminating the employment of over 20 employees allegedly involved in protests against the company’s involvement in Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion cloud computing venture with the Israeli government. This move comes shortly after 28 employees were fired last week for participating in sit-in protests at Google’s offices in New York and California.

The protests, initiated by employees expressing concerns over the ethical implications of Google’s collaboration with the Israeli government, have escalated into a significant dispute within the tech giant. A spokesperson for the advocacy group No Tech for Apartheid, Jane Chung, criticized Google’s actions, claiming that those fired were merely “non-participating bystanders.”

This latest development brings the total number of dismissals to nearly 50, raising questions about Google’s stance on employee activism and corporate responsibility. The company’s head of security, Chris Rackow, had previously condemned the protests, citing disruptions to the workplace environment and threats to employee safety.

CEO Sundar Pichai addressed the issue, emphasizing Google’s commitment to fostering open dialogue but asserting the need to maintain a professional workplace environment. Pichai stated, “We have a culture of vibrant, open discussion that enables us to create amazing products and turn great ideas into action. That’s important to preserve.”

Google’s response to the protests has drawn mixed reactions, with some applauding the company’s efforts to uphold workplace standards, while others criticize what they perceive as a suppression of employee voices. The controversy underscores ongoing tensions between tech companies and their employees over ethical and political issues.

In a statement to Hindustan Times, a spokesperson for Google reiterated the company’s commitment to addressing workplace disruptions, stating that the termination of employees was based on thorough investigations into their involvement in disruptive activities. Despite the company’s stance, the incident has reignited debates surrounding corporate accountability and the rights of employees to express dissent within the workplace.

In a move aimed at streamlining its operations, Meta is set to lay off employees from its Reality Labs division, specifically from the unit responsible for creating custom silicon for the metaverse. According to sources familiar with the matter, the layoffs are scheduled for Wednesday.

Employees were notified about these impending changes via a post on Meta’s internal discussion forum, Workplace, on Tuesday. They can expect to receive official notifications regarding their employment status with the company by early Wednesday morning.

As of now, Meta has not provided official comments on these plans. The exact scale of the layoffs within the silicon unit, known as the Facebook Agile Silicon Team (FAST), remains unclear. FAST currently boasts around 600 employees, according to one of the sources.

FAST plays a pivotal role in Meta’s mission to develop custom chips that power augmented and virtual reality hardware, including products like the mixed reality headsets called Quest and smart glasses created in collaboration with Ray-Ban eyeglass maker EssilorLuxottica. These smart glasses can stream video and interact with wearers through a cutting-edge artificial intelligence virtual assistant.

Meta recently unveiled updated versions of its smart glasses and introduced the Quest 3 headset at the annual Connect conference. In addition to these offerings, the company is also actively working on augmented reality glasses capable of projecting virtual objects onto transparent lenses, alongside accompanying smartwatches.

While Meta has made significant strides in the metaverse realm, it has faced challenges in developing competitive silicon chips. As a result, it has sought the expertise of chipmaker Qualcomm for its current range of devices, including Quest headsets and Ray-Ban smart glasses.

This workforce adjustment reflects Meta’s ongoing efforts to refine its operations and adapt to the ever-evolving landscape of the metaverse, ensuring that its products continue to meet the high standards of innovation and quality in this dynamic field.
