Krishna Janmashtami, the joyous celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth, is in full swing, with the Krishna Janmabhoomi temple in Mathura radiating an aura of divine fervor. As Hindu devotees from across the globe gather to mark this auspicious occasion, the spotlight today is on the spirited Dahi Handi festivities that pay homage to Lord Krishna’s playful childhood antics.

This year, Krishna Janmashtami spans two consecutive days, September 6 and September 7, marking Lord Krishna’s 5250th birth anniversary according to Vedic chronology. The festivities commenced with great enthusiasm at 11:57 pm on September 6 and will conclude at 12:42 am on September 7.

Dahi Handi, also known as Gopalakala or Utlotsavam, is a cherished cultural tradition, particularly in Maharashtra, that mirrors Lord Krishna’s endearing title as “Makhan Chor” or butter thief. In his youth, Lord Krishna, with the help of his friends, would mischievously pilfer dahi, butter, and other dairy treasures from earthen pots hung from the ceilings of neighboring homes.

Dahi Handi celebrations reenact this delightful episode from Krishna’s life. Across Maharashtra and various parts of India, Dahi Handi competitions take center stage. The essence of the tradition lies in filling an earthen pot with milk, curd, butter, or other dairy delights. A spirited group of participants forms human pyramids, reminiscent of Krishna and his friends, to reach the coveted matka (earthen pot). Armed with a sturdy stick, they aim to break the pot and claim victory. The team that successfully reaches the pot first and shatters it emerges triumphant in this heartwarming contest.

The resonating cheers and vibrant energy surrounding Dahi Handi competitions are a testament to the enduring appeal of Lord Krishna’s youthful adventures. These celebrations not only honor the beloved deity but also strengthen the cultural fabric of the communities that come together to partake in the festivities.

New Delhi: On the auspicious occasion of Teachers’ Day, The World Environment Council in collaboration with the International Environmental Studies Olympiad successfully coordinated an International Webinar on the role of teachers in creating environmental awareness in youth. The webinar came into action at 6 PM, on the 5th of September 2023. The webinar gathered environmentalists, chancellors, university directors, government officials, professors, and school teachers from all across the globe including India, Nepal, USA, Dubai etc.

The webinar commenced with a warm welcome from WEC Member, Aditya Kumar Channa, followed by an introduction by the Advisor of WEC, Dheeraj Kumar, who presented an overview of the World Environment Council (WEC) as well as the International Environmental Studies Olympiad (IESO). The foremost guest speaker was Dr. Jubilee Padmanabhan from the Department of School Education, Central University, Punjab. She enlightened the crowd about some key aspects of the role of teachers in fostering environmental awareness in youth and how it is of paramount significance, as they play a pivotal role in molding the attitudes, behaviors, and values of the upcoming generation. Educators are not just instructors; they are mentors and influencers who have the unique opportunity to instill a deep understanding of environmental issues and a sense of responsibility for the planet in their students.

In continuation of the webinar, Dr Ajaykumar Lolage, ex-special officer, Balbharti, Pune; discussed Education and Knowledge Dissemination: “Teachers are the primary source of knowledge for students”. They introduce them to concepts related to the environment, climate change, biodiversity, conservation, and sustainability. Through well-designed curricula and engaging lessons, teachers expose students to a foundational understanding of environmental issues and also embody them with the Inspiration and Motivation to create a change.

They hold the power to influence their students. By sharing their passion for environmental conservation and sustainability, they can ignite a similar enthusiasm in young minds. Inspirational teachers often lay the foundation by examples, resonating with their actions in taking care of the environment.

Our next Guest Speaker was Dr. Kavita Sharma from Environmental Education (Moef and Cl) (NCERT). She expressed her point of view concerning the theme and also gave a detailed explanation of Empowerment, Global Perspective, Values and Ethics. She also emphasized on  “Adaptation to Change: Teachers help students understand that environmental conditions are constantly changing, and adaptation is key to resilience.” They teach students how to adapt and mitigate the impacts of climate change and other environmental challenges. In  the continuation our next guest was Dr. Sukh Dev Singh CEO of IFS, Delhi  . He spoke about  the   Connecting Global Issues to Local Context: Teachers can help students understand how global environmental issues are interconnected with local concerns. By exploring the impact of environmental problems on their own communities, students may be more motivated to take action.

 For Maintaining the continuation of the program, Prof. Mr. Ganesh Channa, Founder and President of the World Environment Council and one of the honorable Guest speakers of the evening, along with our National Education Excellence Awardees, Mrs. Vidhya Jadhav, Prof. Helata Talesra, Dr. Santosh Sonavane, Dr. Bl Yadav, Prof. Hemant Samant, Dr. Chaman Singh Thakur, Mr. Narendra Bogam and Mr. Niranjan Singh, addressed the matter with great concern and encouraged the implementation of reasonable solutions to cope up with the profound initiatives to conserve the mother nature.

The webinar concluded with an interactive session for the non-speaker participants, clarifying their hesitations and doubts. The participation of the respected dignitaries proved to be an asset in making the event successful, implanting ideas to militate the derogation of the environment and promote the social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainability.

In a recent interview, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated his vision for India’s future, envisioning that by the time of the 100th Independence Day of India, it will have grown into a developed country which is free from corruption, casteism, and communism.

PM Modi to give emphasis to India’s growing influence on the global stage, particularly in the context of the forthcoming G20 summit to be held in New Delhi. He noted that India is increasingly perceived as a global leader whose words and vision are considered a path for the future, transcending mere ideas. He also highlighted the shift from a GDP-centric view to a human-centric one, with India playing a key role in this transformation.

PM Modi said that India possesses a demographic advantage with its vast population potentially providing a significant demographic dividend in the coming decades. He urged Indians to lay the foundation for long-lasting growth and highlighted that India is no longer viewed solely as a large market but as a contributor to global solutions.

Taking a critical stance on opposition parties and what his party, the BJP, terms the “freebie culture,” the Prime Minister cautioned against irresponsible financial policies and populism, citing their adverse long-term social and economic consequences.

PM Modi also reflected on India’s role as the host of the G20 and its impact on Third World countries, asserting that India’s presidency has strengthened the confidence of these nations. He stressed that India’s domestic approach to addressing the needs of marginalized communities also guides its global role, with the G20 theme, “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” reflecting India’s cultural ethos.

Regarding India’s stand point on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, PM Modi restated the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable means to resolve conflicts. He defended India’s decision to purchase fuel from Russia despite sanctions, emphasizing that every country seeks the best possible deals for its citizens.

Also about the climate change, the Prime Minister acknowledged the difficulties of the issue and said that there are no single size fits to all solutions, he also advices developed countries to put in more effort to fight against climate change.

In a historic milestone for Indian space exploration, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched its first-ever solar observatory mission, Aditya-L1, today from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The mission aims to provide invaluable insights into the Sun’s behavior and its impact on Earth.

Key Highlights of the Aditya-L1 Mission:

Aditya-L1, which means “the Sun” in Sanskrit, is India’s pioneering space-based observatory designed to study the outer atmosphere of our closest star, the Sun. The spacecraft will be placed in a halo orbit around the Lagrange point 1 (L1) of the Sun-Earth system, located approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. This strategic positioning will enable Aditya-L1 to provide a continuous and unobstructed view of the Sun, offering real-time data on solar activities and their effects on our planet and other celestial bodies.

Scientific Objectives of the Aditya-L1 Mission:

Solar Atmospheric Dynamics: The mission aims to study the dynamics of the solar upper atmosphere, specifically the chromosphere and corona, shedding light on their behavior and fluctuations.

Heating Mechanisms: Aditya-L1 will investigate the mechanisms behind the heating of the chromosphere and corona, the physics of partially ionized plasma, and the initiation of coronal mass ejections and solar flares.

In-situ Particle and Plasma Environment: The mission will provide crucial data on particle dynamics originating from the Sun, enhancing our understanding of the solar wind and its composition.

Corona Diagnostics: Aditya-L1 will measure the temperature, velocity, and density of the coronal plasma and loops, unraveling the mysteries of the Sun’s outermost layer.

Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs): The mission will delve into the development, dynamics, and origin of coronal mass ejections, critical for space weather predictions.

New Delhi: In a significant development, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has achieved deemed university status, as announced by Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on the occasion of the Council’s 63rd foundation day. This recognition grants NCERT the authority to confer its own graduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees, marking a substantial expansion of its influence in India’s educational sphere.

“NCERT has been designated as a deemed-to-be-university. It has made a substantial impact on research, actively influencing school education, teacher training, and adult literacy. With NCERT’s transition into a research university, it will open doors for global collaborations,” stated Pradhan.

As the leading organization for school education in India, NCERT is engaged in various activities and programs, including educational research, curriculum development, and the creation of educational materials.

Pradhan also proposed the integration of Bal Bhavans and Bal Vatikas (child-centric learning centers) into NCERT, envisioning a comprehensive educational approach designed to provide holistic education to children.

The deemed-to-be-university status awarded to NCERT falls under the ‘de novo’ category. This designation allows NCERT to apply to the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the establishment of a new institution as a deemed university, specializing in the study and research of emerging areas of knowledge not currently offered by existing institutions. In addition to granting degrees to teachers, NCERT will have the autonomy to determine the courses it wishes to offer.

Furthermore, Pradhan proposed the establishment of augmented reality, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence labs at NCERT’s regional centers.

In the wake of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) expanding its membership, concerns are growing about the future trajectory and purpose of this international platform. Recent events, such as the contrasting approaches of Russia and India, highlight the divergent paths within BRICS.

BRICS originated in the early 2000s as an attempt to understand global economic transformations. However, it truly gained momentum in 2009 when leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, and China came together for the first BRIC Summit. Their joint statement emphasized support for multilateral rule-making, a multipolar world order, and democratic decision-making in international financial institutions.

Over the years, BRICS aimed to gain a stronger voice in the international financial system, leading to the establishment of the New Development Bank (NDB) in 2013. The NDB was seen both as a challenger to established institutions like the IMF and as a means to democratize global governance.

Despite these initiatives, BRICS has faced challenges, especially as the global balance of power shifts. Russia was once crucial in managing China’s growing economic dominance within the group, but today, fault lines within BRICS are becoming more pronounced. Russia and China are pushing for a more overtly geopolitical agenda, while India and China find it increasingly difficult to find common ground.

The recent expansion of BRICS, which includes Saudi Arabia, Iran, the UAE, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Argentina, raises questions about the group’s purpose. India’s presence is seen as a counterbalance to prevent BRICS-Plus from becoming an anti-Western platform. However, the lack of a clear direction has led some to question the authenticity and purpose of the group.

Pune: The Serum Institute of India (SII) has announced its ambitious plan to introduce a pioneering malaria vaccine in the country. Cyrus Poona Walla, Managing Director of SII, revealed this incredible development during a press conference organized by the Miss World Organisation in Pune. The event, hosted at the Ritz-Carlton, Pune, welcomed the delegates of Miss World 2023.

Building on the triumphant rollout of Covishield, Poonawalla proudly shared that SII is on the cusp of launching a revolutionary malaria vaccine – a pioneering achievement on a global scale. His words resonated through various media outlets, capturing the excitement surrounding this ground-breaking endeavor.

Furthermore, Poonawalla disclosed that SII is concurrently engaged in crafting a vaccine for dengue, an additional stride towards bolstering public health defences. During the press briefing, he assured that the dengue vaccine would be attainable within a year’s time.

The significance of these advancements cannot be understated, especially within the context of India’s healthcare landscape. As of 2020, India accounted for a staggering 82 percent of global malaria-related deaths, along with a high number of cases in the South-East Asian region. Recent government statistics underline the prevalence of vector-borne diseases in the country, with dengue and malaria leading the chart in 2021.
