Chinese AI Chatbot Ernie Bot Sees Explosive Growth, Hits 200 Million User Milestone

Baidu, the Chinese tech giant, has unveiled remarkable statistics for its AI-powered chatbot, “Ernie Bot,” showcasing its escalating popularity and market penetration. CEO Robin Li disclosed that Ernie Bot has now amassed over 200 million users, doubling its user base from just a few months ago.

Li further highlighted the staggering usage rate of Ernie Bot’s application programming interface (API), which is being leveraged a whopping 200 million times daily. This indicates the substantial demand for the chatbot’s services, with users frequently relying on it to accomplish various tasks. Additionally, Ernie Bot has secured a significant presence in the enterprise sector, boasting 85,000 enterprise clients.

The announcement comes amidst Baidu’s strategic initiatives to monetize Ernie Bot, with revenue generation efforts already underway. In the fourth quarter alone, Baidu capitalized on AI-driven advancements to enhance its advertising solutions, resulting in substantial earnings amounting to several hundred million yuan. Moreover, the company has extended support to other enterprises in building their AI models, further consolidating Ernie Bot’s position in the market.

Ernie Bot, introduced last March as one of China’s pioneering generative AI chatbots, received official approval for public release in August. Notably, China mandates regulatory approval for the deployment of generative AI services, distinguishing it from many other jurisdictions.

Despite Ernie Bot’s impressive growth, it faces competition from domestic rivals, particularly Moonshot AI’s “Kimi” chatbot, backed by Alibaba. Kimi has exhibited rapid expansion, narrowing the gap with Ernie Bot. Recent data indicates a surge in Kimi’s user visits, with a remarkable 321.6 percent increase in March compared to the previous month.

However, on a global scale, Chinese generative AI services still trail behind their Western counterparts. OpenAI’s ChatGPT remains the world leader in this domain, with a staggering total traffic of 1.86 billion views last month.

China’s intensified focus on AI innovation is evident in its accelerated approvals for AI services, underlining its commitment to compete with the United States in the tech sphere. With 117 large AI models receiving approvals thus far, China continues to position itself as a formidable contender in the global AI landscape.

The SRH batting onslaught was spearheaded by an electrifying partnership between the unheralded Indian talent Abhishek Sharma and the celebrated Australian cricketer Travis Head, known for his heroics in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Sharma’s quickfire 34 off 22 deliveries combined with Head’s blistering 102 off just 41 balls laid a robust foundation, propelling SRH to 108 runs in a mere 49 deliveries. Following Sharma’s departure, South African batsman Heinrich Klaasen further fueled the onslaught with a brisk 67 off 31 deliveries, complementing Head’s explosive innings.

Reports suggest that invitations from the Prime Minister’s Office to industry stakeholders for Musk’s visit may be forthcoming next week.

This visit follows the previous meeting between Musk and Modi during the Indian Prime Minister’s trip to the US in June last year. Since then, Musk has been advocating for reduced import duties on electric vehicles (EVs) to facilitate Tesla’s entry into the Indian market.

ECI Implements Reforms to Enhance Participation of Kashmiri Migrants

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced significant relaxations in the voting procedure for Kashmiri migrants who relocated to Jammu and Udhampur in the 1990s, ensuring their seamless participation in the upcoming 2024 general elections. Chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar, a meeting was convened with Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu to address the concerns of displaced voters and streamline the voting process.

Previously, displaced Kashmiri Pandits were mandated to fill out Form M to transfer their voting registration from Kashmir to polling stations in Jammu, Udhampur, or Delhi. However, the ECI has now waived the requirement of Form M for individuals from Baramulla, Srinagar, and Anantnag-Rajouri.

Moreover, the commission has approved the acceptance of self-attested certificates along with Form M from migrants residing outside Jammu and Udhampur, eliminating the need for attestation by a gazetted officer. This decision comes in response to numerous representations received by the ECI highlighting the bureaucratic hurdles faced by Kashmiri migrants during the voting process.

Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu & Kashmir, Pandurang K Pole, lent support to a recommendation by political parties advocating for voting options at transitory camps and through postal ballots for Kashmiri migrants. Consequently, the ECI has designated 22 special polling stations across Jammu and Udhampur, ensuring accessibility for all displaced voters.

These special polling stations will derive electoral roll extracts from the respective assembly constituencies, with measures in place to prevent duplication between postal ballot voters and those voting in person. Migrants residing outside Jammu and Udhampur will have the option to self-attest Form M for voting at special polling stations, presenting their Electors Photo Identification Card or alternative identification.

The ECI’s initiative aims to streamline the voting process for displaced Kashmiris, offering both in-person and postal ballot options. Forms necessary for voting are available on the ECI website, facilitating greater accessibility and participation in the democratic process.

This feature is gradually rolling out for both iOS and Android users, potentially powered by Llama 2 or the upcoming Llama 3 AI models.

Users can access the chatbot through the top search bar in the WhatsApp user interface. Interestingly, the design of the chatbot closely resembles that of Perplexity AI, as noted by Aravind Srinivas, the CEO of Perplexity AI, in a post on X. Despite the similarity in appearance, the integration operates independently, ensuring the privacy of private conversations on WhatsApp. User interactions with the search bar remain confidential and are not shared with Meta AI unless explicitly directed to the chatbot.

Meta AI suggests topics through the search bar or conversation, utilizing randomly generated suggestions that do not rely on user-specific information. The search bar retains its primary function, enabling users to search for chats, messages, media, and contacts within the app. Users can continue to search their conversations for specific content without engaging with Meta AI, preserving ease of use and privacy.

Moreover, personal messages and calls on WhatsApp remain end-to-end encrypted, ensuring that neither WhatsApp nor Meta can access them, even with the integration of Meta AI.

Meta’s expansion of AI initiatives follows the advancements made by prominent tech companies like OpenAI. After piloting its AI chatbot in markets such as the U.S., Meta is now extending testing to India, its largest market with over 500 million Facebook and WhatsApp users.

In addition, Meta has confirmed plans to release its next AI model, Llama 3, within the current month, indicating the company’s commitment to advancing AI technology and improving user experiences across its platforms.
