For 90 minutes on Thursday night, CNN hosted the first presidential debate between former Republican President Donald Trump, 78, and Democratic President Joe Biden, 81. The debate featured sharp exchanges on inflation, immigration, abortion rights, and foreign policy. In the televised debate, the candidates aimed to persuade voters ahead of the upcoming election on November 5.

Polls and Public Opinion

A CNN poll aired immediately after the debate showed a decisive tilt in favor of Trump, with 67% of viewers believing he won the debate, compared to 33% who thought Biden performed better. This was a significant shift from the final 2020 presidential debate, where 53% of viewers felt Biden won, compared to 39% who favored Trump. Many viewers expressed concerns over Biden’s coherence and ability to lead the country effectively.

Key Points from the Debate

The debate enforced strict speaking limits, prohibited notes, and took place without an audience to ensure no reactions. Despite these constraints, the candidates sparred vigorously on key topics:

  • Inflation: Trump criticized Biden’s handling of the economy, blaming him for rising inflation and high living costs. Biden defended his administration’s economic policies, citing job creation and recovery efforts.
  • Immigration: The debate saw fierce exchanges on immigration policies, with Trump advocating for stricter border controls while Biden emphasized a more humane approach to immigration reform.
  • Abortion Rights: Trump reiterated his pro-life stance, while Biden supported women’s right to choose, emphasizing the importance of protecting reproductive rights.
  • Foreign Policy: Both candidates clashed over foreign policy, with Trump criticizing Biden’s handling of international relations and military engagements. Biden, on the other hand, highlighted his efforts to rebuild alliances and promote global stability.

Media and Expert Reactions

The New York Times declared Trump the winner, with columnist Josh Barro stating, “Joe Biden failed at his key task: showing voters he’s still cut out for the presidency. In the first 20 minutes, he was especially disastrous: mumbling, at times incoherent, and seeming really, really old. Trump seemed more normal than usual — enough for a clear win.”

Michelle Goldberg, a columnist and contributor for The New York Times, commented, “Trump, God help us. He spouted a fire hose of preposterous lies, but Biden was too incoherent to capitalize on any of it. Biden looked ancient and sounded lost. There will now be a new chorus of cries for him to drop out, and I’ll be joining it.”

On X (formerly Twitter), observers noted Trump’s strong performance and thorough answers, contrasting with Biden’s perceived confusion during the debate. Alyssa Farah Griffin, a CNN political commentator, wrote, “CNN Flash poll: 57% of viewers of tonight’s debate have NO confidence in Biden’s ability to lead the country. Stunning number from voters who witnessed his performance with their own eyes.”

Former CNN commentator Chris Cillizza added, “Look. This debate was a total and complete disaster for Biden. He looked old. His answers trailed off repeatedly. He was hard to understand. He would stop mid-sentence and move on to something else. I NEVER thought he would be this bad. Stunning. Truly.”

Biden Camp’s Defense

Biden’s team countered claims that he lost the debate, with Vice President Kamala Harris telling CNN, “It was a slow start but a strong finish,” reported Fox News. First Lady Jill Biden praised the president on stage after the debate, saying, “Joe, you did such a good job! You answered every question and knew all the facts.”

Several Democratic Party leaders, however, expressed deep concern over Biden’s performance in the debate. Jay Surdukowski, an attorney and Democratic activist from New Hampshire, told Politico, “Biden is toast – calling it now.”

Conclusion

Though this is the first of the presidential debates and Biden has chances of springing back, the results for now stand at Trump: 1 and Biden: 0. As the election season progresses, the upcoming debates will be crucial in shaping voter opinions and determining the ultimate victor in November.

New Delhi : External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday emphasised on the “common interest” in “stabilisation and progress” in India-China relations during a meeting with Chinese ambassador Xu Feihong, amid the lingering border row in eastern Ladakh.

Jaishankar also separately met envoys of New Zealand, Kuwait and Sri Lanka.

“Received Ambassador of China Xu Feihong this evening. Discussed our bilateral relationship and our common interest in its stabilization and progress. Wished him a successful tenure,” the external affairs minister said on ‘X’.

The ancient ruins include archaeological remains of a monastic and scholastic institution, featuring stupas, shrines, viharas (residential and educational buildings), and significant artworks in stucco, stone, and metal.

Modi held bilateral meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the summit. With Kishida, Modi affirmed prioritizing India-Japan ties in his third term and reviewed collaborative projects like the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail and the India-Japan Industrial Competitiveness Partnership.

In discussions with Meloni, Modi explored enhancing defence and security cooperation, clean energy, manufacturing, space, AI, and critical minerals. They celebrated the signing of an MoU on Industrial Property Rights and a Letter of Intent for Cooperation in Energy Transition. Both leaders also stressed the need for early implementation of the Migration and Mobility Agreement to facilitate professional and academic exchanges.

Earlier, Modi engaged with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He also met with US President Joe Biden, reaffirming India-US cooperation, and King Abdullah II of Jordan, appreciating strong bilateral ties. Modi’s meeting with Pope Francis highlighted his admiration for the Pope’s dedication to service and environmental sustainability, and he extended an invitation to visit India.

Additionally, Modi met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Brazil President Lula da Silva, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, strengthening India’s global diplomatic relations.

President Giorgia Meloni’s remarks at the session on Artificial Intelligence, Energy, Africa and Mediterranean

Italy: good evening everyone, and thank you very much for accepting the invitation to participate in the G7 Outreach session here in Puglia under the Italian Presidency.

We didn’t choose this place by chance, we chose it because Puglia is a southern region of Italy and because it is a land that has historically represented a bridge between West and East, a place of dialogue in the ‘middle sea’ that, through northern Africa and the Middle East, connects the two great maritime spaces of the globe: the Atlantic on one side and the Indo-Pacific on the other.

This place and this wide outreach that we wanted to invite are a clear message from the G7 under the Italian Presidency. We will never accept the narrative that wants the ‘West against the rest’. We know we can only deal with the global challenges we are facing if we are able to cooperate with respect and with a peer-to-peer approach. Among the many global challenges that we are called on to face in this period, we decided to dedicate the Outreach session to those that we consider very pressing: Artificial Intelligence first of all, with the opportunities it opens up and the risks it hides; the Mediterranean, an area of crisis and a place of dialogue; the African continent, with which we work to build a completely new cooperation as equals; and, obviously, the need to deal without ideological approaches with climate change, which impacts above all on the nations of the Global South.

We will have two keynote speakers to start our work. His Holiness Pope Francis, who gave us the great honour to participate in our working session and will share with us his point of view on Artificial Intelligence. It is the first time that a Pontiff participates in a meeting of the Group of Seven, and this inevitably makes today’s appointment a historic moment. So, I will never thank you enough for being here, Your Holiness.

Then we will have His Excellency Mohamed Ould El Ghazouani, President of Mauritania and rotating Chair of the African Union, who will bring the point of view of African nations on the expectations of the continent.

Russia Escalates Missile and Drone Attacks on Ukraine as Global Diplomatic Efforts Intensify

Kyiv, Ukraine — Russian forces launched a barrage of missiles and drones targeting the Kyiv region and five other areas in Ukraine during a nighttime attack on Wednesday. This assault comes as international diplomatic activities ramp up to address the ongoing conflict that has entered its third year.

Ukraine’s air force reported shooting down 29 out of 30 air targets, including four cruise missiles, one Kinzhal ballistic missile, and 24 Shahed drones. Despite the successful interception, several people sustained injuries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy lauded the air force’s efforts, emphasizing that such defensive successes could become routine if Ukraine received additional air defense systems. He reiterated his call for Western allies to provide more support, particularly air defense technology. In response, the United States has committed to sending another Patriot missile system, according to two U.S. officials.

The intensifying attacks coincide with a series of significant international meetings aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defense and exploring pathways to peace. Leaders from the Group of Seven (G7) rich democracies, including U.S. President Joe Biden, are set to convene in Italy on Thursday for their annual summit. A key agenda item will be strategizing on how to channel more funds to Ukraine by leveraging frozen Russian assets.

On the same day, defense chiefs from the U.S., Europe, and other nations will gather in Brussels for their monthly discussion on Ukraine’s security needs. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will host this meeting, underscoring the urgency of addressing Ukraine’s military requirements as the conflict drags on.

Adding to the flurry of diplomatic activity, Switzerland will host a peace summit next weekend, drawing representatives from nearly 90 countries and organizations, including numerous European nations. Notably, Russia will not participate in this summit, highlighting the ongoing international isolation of Moscow.

Ukraine continues to face severe challenges on the battlefield. Its forces, outgunned and outnumbered, are striving to hold back the larger Russian army. Recent months have seen Ukrainian troops struggling with shortages of personnel, ammunition, and air defenses as Russian forces aim to disrupt national power supplies and break through front lines in the eastern regions. Military analysts suggest that Ukraine must endure the summer onslaught, train more soldiers, fortify defenses, and hope for an acceleration in Western military aid to potentially mount its own offensive in 2025.

Meanwhile, Russia’s efforts have been marked by incremental and costly gains. In the northeastern Kharkiv region, Russian units have been bogged down in the town of Vovchansk, according to Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. The Kremlin’s forces have also been concentrating their efforts on the partly occupied Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine, with an eye on strategic hubs like the hilltop city of Chasiv Yar.

The human toll of Europe’s largest conflict since World War II is staggering, with tens of thousands of casualties on both sides, including over 11,000 Ukrainian civilian deaths reported by the United Nations. As Ukraine looks to its Western allies for continued support, Russian President Vladimir Putin has sought assistance from nations like Iran and North Korea. Reports suggest that Putin may soon make a third visit to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, further indicating the lengths to which Russia is going to secure resources for its war effort.

As the war grinds on, the international community remains divided, with both sides reaching out to friendly nations for military and economic support. The upcoming diplomatic engagements will be crucial in shaping the future course of the conflict and the prospects for a resolution.

Narendra Modi Sworn in as Prime Minister of India for Third Term; New Council of Ministers Takes Oath

New Delhi : Shri. Narendra Modi was sworn in today as the Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive term. President Droupadi Murmu administered the Oath of Office and Secrecy to Mr. Modi, along with the new Council of Ministers, at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhawan. During the swearing-in ceremony, 31 Cabinet Ministers, five Ministers of State (Independent Charge), and 36 Ministers of State took the oath.

Senior BJP leaders Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Dr. S. Jaishankar, Piyush Goyal, Dharmendra Pradhan, Nirmala Sitharaman, and BJP President J.P. Nadda were sworn in as Cabinet Ministers. Other senior party leaders, including Kiren Rijiju, Pralhad Joshi, Giriraj Singh, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Bhupender Yadav, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Annapurna Devi, Hardeep Singh Puri, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, G. Kishan Reddy, C.R. Patil, Dr. Virendra Kumar, and Jual Oram, also took the oath as Cabinet Ministers. Former Chief Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Manohar Lal, and Sarbananda Sonowal were among those administered the oath as Cabinet Ministers. Additionally, former Karnataka Chief Minister and JD(S) MP H.D. Kumaraswamy, former Bihar Chief Minister and HAM party chief Jiten Ram Manjhi, JD(U) MP Rajiv Ranjan Singh, TDP MP Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, and LJP (Ram Vilas) Chief Chirag Paswan were sworn in as Cabinet Ministers. BJP leaders Rao Inderjit Singh, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Prataprao Jadhav of Shiv Sena, and RLD Chief Jayant Chaudhary took the oath as Ministers of State (Independent Charge).

During the ceremony, 36 Ministers of State also took the oath. They include BJP MPs Jitin Prasada, Shripad Yesso Naik, Pankaj Chaudhary, Nityanand Rai, Krishan Pal, V. Somanna, S.P. Singh Baghel, Shobha Karandlaje, Suresh Gopi, Raksha Khadse, Ajay Tamta, Bandi Sanjay Kumar, Kamlesh Paswan, Harsh Malhotra, Satish Dubey, and Ravneet Singh Bittu. Also sworn in were RPI’s Ramdas Athawale, Ramnath Thakur of JD(U), Anupriya Patel of Apna Dal (S), and TDP’s Dr. Pemmasani Chandrasekhar.

Several leaders from neighboring countries and the Indian Ocean region attended the swearing-in ceremony, including Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Seychelles Vice-President Ahmed Afif, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, Nepali Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ and Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.

Notable dignitaries present at the event included Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Chief Justice of India Dr. D.Y. Chandrachud, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister-designate N. Chandrababu Naidu, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Manipur Chief Minister N.
